The Status of A Teacher: Then and Now

There are a lot of flaws in our society but some of them have a far greater potential of dragging us towards disaster. One such potentially damaging flaw of our society is our youth’s loss respect towards their teachers. A teacher used to be regarded as one of the most respectable individuals in our society. However not anymore.

It is now opposite in our society. Teachers give us a respectable life, they give awareness to us, and they make us capable to differentiate between the right and wrong. But sadly, teachers are not given the level of respect which they deserve.

The pen is also ashamed to write that now teachers are considered as mere “Paying Servants.” It’s a moment of concern that not only children but parents also believe that way. We only pay teachers for that precious time, which they spend teaching us. We can’t possibly pay them equally for their experience and knowledge which they got in 30 to 35 years of hard efforts which they teach us in those few minutes.

When teachers teach, they actually give the part of their life to us. Aristotle said, “Those who educate our children well are more to be honored than the actual parents, for the parents only give them life, but teachers give them the art of living well.”

However, our modern society does not seem to appreciate this reality. A point to be noted here is that some parents themselves give a lesson to their children that it’s the teachers’ duty to teach because they get paid for it. No doubt it’s their duty to teach with all honesty. But we also have to remember our duty to give them respect.

Such parents harm society as well as their kids, because that same child whom they teach such behaviour, fail to form any respect for teachers which is very necessary to learn.

Going by the same logic, these children might tell you the same thing that it’s your duty to bring them up. It’s your duty to educate them. Why should they be thankful to you as parents? You have done nothing special but have carried out your duty. Your duty is fulfilled and it’s time to say a goodbye.

Hence, in order to build a progressive nation children must be asked to respect their teachers. A teacher is another form of a parent and teaching respect of teachers to your children is the same as teaching them to respect you as parents. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) summed it very well when he said, “He is not one of us who does not respect our elderly, is not merciful to our youth, and does not know the rights of those who teach us”.
