NA-250 Karachi sees low turnout in repoll in 43 polling stations

NA-250-RepollElection Commission of Pakistan (ECP) today held a re-poll on 43 polling stations of NA-250 constituency of Karachi. The voter turnout was quite low. However, there were polling stations where the people waited in long lines to cast their votes. MQM (Muttahida Qoumi Movement) boycotted the re-poll in only 43 polling stations.

MQM, PPP boycotted this repoll as they demanded a repoll in the whole constituency. They said that it was analogous to stealing their mandate to not hold re-poll in the whole constituency. However, ECP rejected their demand and went ahead with their earlier plan of holding re-poll only in those 43 polling stations where there were reports of rigging or other related problems.

Turnout was quite low as compared to May, 11. In some polling stations the number of polled votes were less than five. The biggest reason of this low turn out is mostly due to the boycott of MQM. People, expecting some backlash, were scared  to come out of their homes. Just a day earlier, the PTI(Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) women wing vice President Zahra Hussain was ruthlessly murdered by some unidentified men. Fear loomed large in the constituency which resulted in this low turnout.

Moreover, PTI Chief Imran Khan blamed Altaf Hussain of killing Zahra Hussain. He said that Altaf Hussain was directly responsible for the murder of Miss. Hussain. MQM however rejected this accusation of PTI chief.
