How the likes of Netflix are killing the traditional TV industry

The start of 2016 saw Netflix announcing the launch of its services in Pakistan and 129 other countries over the world. The Co-founder and Chief Executive Reed Hastings had said: “Today you are witnessing the birth of a new global Internet TV network”.

Netflix is the world’s leading video streaming network and with its corporate philosophy of flexibility being more important than efficiency, it is certainly growing every day. It lets the costumer watch the show or movie in any way the customer prefers. That is something that standard cable TV is unable to provide – having a once a week programming model. With Netflix, you can watch an episode per day or you can binge-watch an entire season. The choice is up to you.

In a society that’s becoming more hedonistic, Netflix decided to dig for customer preferences and find what content interests the public. Using this gathered information, the company decided what original content it should make.

Some of the most popular shows of 2015 were Netflix produced, like “Orange is the New Black” or “House of Cards”. Also, let us not forget that Netflix is 20% cheaper than most cable packages and that you are able to watch anything without the tiresome ads.

So it looks like traditional TV is either going to adapt or vanish in the near future.

More and more homes are going to subscribe to on-demand video services and with Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus competing each other there is no space for non flexible, old fashioned cable companies.

It is a Darwinian world out there, adapt and change or die. The idea of ad-filled one week one episode is over.
