Nepal Earthquake

The earthquake in Nepal was the most powerful disaster to hit the country in its history.  The death toll has reached the 8,000 figure while twice as many are injured. Nepal’s Prime Minister Sushil Koirala has stated that the number could reach 10,000.

In addition to that, centuries old buildings were destroyed at UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu Valley and adjacent areas. Manakamana Temple in Gorkha was also destroyed. Dharahara tower built in 1832 also collapsed that resulted in the death of at least 180 people.

Continous aftershocks were felt throughout Nepal with one shock reaching as high as 6.7 magnitude on 26 April at 12.54:08 NST with an epicenter located about 17km south of Kodari Nepal. It was a major aftershock which blocked the section of road between Bhedetar and Mulghate.

The aftershocks though have ended by now, but the country faces a continuous risk of landslides at different areas.

This earthquake caused many avalanches on Mount Everest. At least 19 climbers including Goyle executive Dn Fredinburg are dead with many missing and dozens injured.

Pakistan through its army has sent various items and tents to help the people of Nepal. The army has set up a field medical hospital where the injured are looked after. Recently a woman gave birth to a child in the same field hospital who was named Pakistan by their parents in order to honor the help Pakistan has extended to the Nepalese people in this hour of need.

Pakistan army is also taking part in the rescue operation with sniffer dogs.
