Gender bias occurs because of personal values, perception and outdated, traditional views about men and women. Gender bias is everywhere especially in third world countries like Pakistan. However, when the topic of gender bias at workplace comes up, it’s usually within the context of women being victims of workplace discrimination.

Gender bias related issues play a significant role in each woman’s decision to leave the corporate world. There are a lot of woman who have left their job after they were subjected to harsh and bias views at work. All of the women had reached middle or senior management positions. And although, each cited domestic reasons as factors in her decision to leave, three of the women openly came forward and complained that their former organizations had leadership structures and cultures dominated by men who made it difficult for women to get ahead.

One woman, a senior manager, described her ordeal saying she was “actively shunned” by the men in her organization and not taken seriously. Another female, who was the only female in her organization and she was the only one without an administrative title. After being passed over several times for promotion, she took her case to a tribunal and won.

It has also been observed that females are paid less as compared to males for the same amount of work done. Besides other discrimination and problems such as occupational segregation by gender, sexual harassment and violence at workplace, females have to endure societal pressure of being a working woman and that too among men. And, when you add to the list her responsibilities to raise her children and take care of her family, it just makes it a lot more difficult for her to carry on.

Though difficult, it is very possible to reduce the influence of stereotypes on organizational decisions if the government seriously pursues such matters. There are ample amount of laws that protects women from being subjected to such behaviour. All that is needed is a serious resolve from law enforcing agencies.
