Tackling The Menace of Sexual Harassment in Pakistan

Sexual Harassment in Pakistan

We all say we love Pakistan, and can do anything for it, even die for it. However, the reality is that we as a nation just talk big but we are not willing to do even small things. The bar of morality has come way down. No body is willing to call a spade a spade.

A female that goes out of her home for school, or work, has to face a lot of sneering eyes and endure catcalling. Everyone seems to forget that she too is someone’s mother, sister or daughter. There needs a solid step against this sexual harassment.

Numerous laws have been introduced to protect women against sexual harassment but their implementation is equal to none. Women are subjected to sexual harassment everywhere and there seems no way out for women to protect themselves.

And again, reporting incidents of sexual harassment is not that easy for women in our society. The social stigma of people knowing about such incidents can ruin a woman’s life. However, even if she somehow gathers enough courage to report an incident, the behavior of the law enforcement agencies’ personnels tend to be more sexist than the person against whom the woman is filing the report.

They treat her as if she is infact the guilty one. She doesn’t feel any protection there. She is not taken seriously. Most of the times, she is discouraged from filing an FIR and they come up with various excuses as to why it could turn out to be more dangerous for her.

The typical police mindset of our country is not quite fit to handle such delicate and sensitive issue. Either they need some serious counseling and training or the government needs to setup alternative reporting centers for such issues. The personnel in these separate department should be selected after going through some rigorous screening process.

The buck stops with the government. They have to ensure that the laws against sexual harassment are fully implemented in letter and spirit. They have to create a protective environment for women so that they feel secured while reporting an incident. Sexual harassment is a serious matter and has to be taken as one.
