Sharmila Farooqi’s Wedding VS ‘One Dish Bill’ and People of Thar

Sharmila Farooqi Wedding

Recently, Sharmila Farooqi finally tied the knot with Hasham Riaz Sheikh, son of former Director General, Federal Investigation Authority (FIA) and owner of Capital TV Ahmed Riaz Sheikh.

Sharmila Farooqi had, on numerous occasions, raised her voice in Sindh assembly against lavish weddings and had presented the “One dish Bill” in assembly. However, it seems like she could not comply with it herself.

Sharmila’s wedding unbelievingly went on for 15 days, which started on the 22nd of Feb and dragged till the 8th of March. There were different themes, clothes and food for each different day. The wedding cards were published in 7 different colors for all seven functions.

She sat for her ‘Mayion’ on the 22nd of February. A music day was set on the 25th of February. “Nikkah” ceremony was on 28th February. The ‘Mehndi’ ceremony was held on the 3rd of March. She left for her new house (Rukhsati) on the 5th of March. And finally a grand Walima ceremony was held on 8th of March in Lahore.

On the one hand, the people of our country, especially people of Thar in Sindh, are dying of hunger, and our political leaders are spending millions just on their wedding ceremonies. She had a chance to become a role model for other women and could have celebrated her wedding in a more simple way. She went completely opposite to what we thought she stood for. How can she ever stand in the assembly again and raise her voice in favour of simplicity?

The amount of money that she spent on her wedding could have been donated to the people of Thar, where people are dying because of drought. In those fifteen days while Sharmila was so lavishly spending money, many children died in Thar just because they didn’t have anything to eat and drink.

Ladies and gentlemen, be proud of your political leaders who represent you in such a wonderful way.
